Catalonia-based Savia Natura has just launched an unusual snack made of cod and salmon skin, which is catching visitors’ attention at Seafood Expo Southern Europe in Barcelona this week.
Developed in partnership with Alicante-based processor Salazones Pertusa, the snack is gluten-free and presented as an ‘all natural’ premium product.
Launched only on Monday, the range — which comes in a range of flavors — was presented in bulk sizes for the foodservice sector and in smaller retail packs, and has no distribution deals to date.
But great interest garnered during the trade show has brought promising prospects, Carolina Artiaga, export manager at Savia Natura, told Undercurrent News on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
“The fish snacks were launched on Monday at the event and, since then, we have met plenty of distributors interested in our new product,” said Artiaga.
Savia Natura’s busy stand at the exhibition appeared to support this. Industry players from northern Europe, the UK, Asia and the United Arab Emirates showed interest, suggesting potential for exports, said Artiaga.
Although production volumes have not been worked out yet, Savia Natura has already planned an investment in a second plant with Salazones Pertusa to meet projected growing demand.Artiaga declined to unveil the size of the investment.
“So far, I cannot speak about prices either, but our product is a premium snack, addressing people with an healthy life-style, who care about what they eat,” Artiaga said.
“Our product is also cholesterol free, has omega-3 and is low in calories,” she said.
The snacks’ flavors include Mediterranean, barbecue, curry, oriental and spicy.
The range has two lines, Fish Snack’s, similar to crisps; and FishDish’s, pre-fried snack for dipping. The latter is addressed at the foodservice sector, Artiaga said.
Savia Natura will also look into developing other innovative seafood products in the future.
